I'm currently on a two-week placement at Different, having done a week in copy; I am now doing a week in design. I'm really enjoying the placement. Different have given me several fantastic opportunities, each of which have been very beneficial, giving me a real understanding of the industry.
I was made to feel comfortable straight away. The team have welcomed any suggestions or ideas that I've had, giving me suggestions of how to expand them. They have been more than happy to answer any questions I had about the industry, ensuring that when I leave, I leave with a good idea of how the industry works.
When working in copy, I was writing radio commercials, Facebook adverts, subheads and strap-lines. I was given the opportunity to attend meetings with the production team, which was interesting to see how they came to a compromise. I was also given the opportunity to go to the recording studio to see the radio adverts be recorded, and I was able to sit in on a client meeting regarding some copy. Sitting in on meetings gave me a real understanding of what a copywriter has to work with, which was fascinating. My mentor, Sue, definitely went the extra mile to ensure I got the most out of this incredible opportunity.
I wrote a piece of long copy for a competition, and when I started working in design, I was able to design the rest of the advert to go with the copy I had written. My mentor, Marcus, showed me how to use the software and was very attentive with any problems I had with it. Currently, I am working on a big L'Oréal campaign that the design team are working on, which is fantastic to be a part of!
So far, each day has been different. The placement has given me an excellent insight to how the industry works and has definitely helped me confirm the career path that I need to take. The 'office crack' is also superb! What more can you ask for?
